Check Out: Between the Helpless and the Darkness

Between the Helpless and the Darkness

We live in a world scarred by colonialism, racism, and misogyny.  But are these roads we were doomed to travel, and are there lessons for the present found in rewriting the past?

In 1066 King Harald Hardrada of Norway invaded England, hoping to become the ruler of all the North, capping a life of ambition and adventure that led him from being carried, wounded, off a battlefield at the age of fourteen all the way to the Byzantium Empire, returning twenty years later with a vast fortune to claim the throne of Norway.  He died in England, at the battle of Stamford Bridge, along with all his dreams.

But what if he didn't die? What if instead he fled, wounded, defeated, with all his life's ambition seared away?  What if he sought to leave the destruction of his dreams behind and instead led his remaining followers to Iceland, Greenland and beyond, all the way to the shores of North America?

So much of our history revolves around powerful men seeking to dominate and conquer.  What if someone with power, charisma, and experience could move beyond that simple dynamic and strive to build around goals that matter.

Between the Helpless and the Darkness is a rollicking adventure, a skilled bit of alternative history, but the book is also trying to say something that matters, something about the true purpose of power.
