RITC: What inspired you to write this book?

Doug Lawrence: Colleagues had seen the state of disarray that mental health is in and were aware of the work that I am doing in that space. They recommended that I write and share my lived experiences.

RITC: What messages or themes do you hope readers take away from your book?

Doug Lawrence:

a) That it is okay to reach out and ask for help

b) Mentoring needs to be a part of the mental health support structure

c) Sharing what you are feeling is part of the healing journey

d) A good mentor will listen and hear

e) Our conversation is confidential

RITC: What other books have you written or what's your next writing project?

Doug Lawrence:

The Gift of Mentoring – 2014

My next book is in the manuscript review process

RITC: What advice would you give to new writers?

Doug Lawrence: Stay focused on the purpose for telling your story otherwise there will be too many distractions. Be mindful of triggers that you may experience at various times in the writing process

RITC: Who's your favorite writer and outside of your book, what other book would you recommend? and why?

Doug Lawrence: Ken Blanchard Gung Ho. I enjoy his books because they tell a story. The story has a purpose and meaning.
