Melody Horrill, author of ‘A Cat Called Q and the Magic Globe.’ This book is a whimsical and at times, funny tale that features strong environmental themes. The story follows a ten-year-old girl called Sheri, who after finding a magical snow globe in a charity shop embarks on an adventure to save an enchanted world. Along with her best friend and Q, a majestic mischievous, sandwich-loving cat, she embarks on a treacherous adventure to save the land and its animals. Sheri is forced to draw on her inner courage as she faces a vain, evil, avocado-obsessed overlord and his ratty sidekick. ‘A Cat Called Q and the Magic Globe’ highlights the importance of believing in ourselves, being brave, caring for the natural world, and embracing our connection to it.

Interview:
RITC: What inspired you to write this book?
Author Melody Horrill: I wanted to write an entertaining young adult fiction that helps young people connect with the magic of nature. The book explores the themes of animal protection, conservation, finding inner strength, and how each one of us can make a difference.
As a young girl, I escaped into books and dreamed up the idea of writing a story about a girl who visits a magical world filled with fantastical animals, arriving through magical a glass orb. As an adult finally writing the book, I decided to focus on what I had learned from nature and include an ebony feline hero called ‘Quasar’ (Q for short), based on my rescue cat and much-loved writing companion. I drew on the people and animals I have encountered as a basis for all the characters in the book. I also sourced a lot of the young heroine’s characteristics and experiences from my own life and love of snow globes!
RITC: What messages or themes do you hope readers take away from your book?
Author Melody Horrill: The importance of using your voice, of caring for nature, protecting the natural world, and being brave. Compassion for all living things and why biodiversity is so important.
RITC: What other books have you written or what's your next writing project?
Author Melody Horrill: My memoir ‘The Dolphin Who Saved Me’ was published internationally last year. It is a story about how a solitary, wild, injured dolphin called Jock helped me heal from the scars left by my childhood which was wracked with domestic violence. The story outlines how Jock became my greatest life coach and helped me to trust, find forgiveness, bravery and focus on the possibilities of life rather than my own sad past.
My second non-fiction titled ‘Sheltered’ will be released in September. That book showcases real-life, heart-felt stories between rescue animals and the people who love them.
RITC: What advice would you give to new writers?
Author Melody Horrill: Just start writing. Don’t worry about the structure or making your first draft perfect. Just get into the habit of allocating time each day to write. The rest will follow. Also, don’t let your inner critic get the better of you. We all have a little voice that questions our abilities – acknowledge it but use it to strengthen your resolve and keep going. No matter what others say, keep persisting. You will get there!
RITC: Who's your favorite writer and outside of your book, what other book would you recommend? and why?
Author Melody Horrill: I have always loved Tolkien and I’m also a fan of the beautiful simplicity of Paulo Coelho and admire his economic use of words to create an impactful story that oozes heart and soul. I would recommend that people read Dr Jane Goodall’s books, which are all full of hope and wisdom – they are a source of true inspiration.
